Basic Care for Leather Accessories

Leather varies by finish and treatment, so start gently and follow the maker’s instructions when they are available.

Store with support

Empty the item, lightly support its shape with clean acid-free tissue, and store it upright in a breathable dust bag. Avoid sealed plastic, direct sunlight, radiators, and damp basements.

Clean conservatively

Remove loose dust with a soft dry cloth. Before using any cleaner or conditioner, test a tiny hidden area and allow it to dry. Suede, nubuck, patent leather, coated canvas, and unfinished leather require different care.

Respond to moisture

Blot—do not rub—unexpected moisture with a clean absorbent cloth. Let the item air-dry away from heat. A hair dryer or radiator can stiffen, shrink, or distort leather.

Prevent color transfer

Dark denim and strongly dyed fabrics can transfer color to pale materials. Avoid long contact when either surface is damp, and keep cosmetics and pens in separate pouches.

Know when to use a professional

Deep stains, mold, torn structural seams, peeling finishes, and valuable vintage pieces are good reasons to consult a leather-care or restoration professional.
