Tip and Bill Split Calculator

Calculate a tip, total bill, and equal per-person share in a few taps.

Enter the pre-tip bill, choose a tip percentage, and set the number of people paying. The results update immediately.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill before tip.
  2. Select the desired tip percentage.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the total.

Good to know

The split assumes everyone pays an equal share.

Currency symbols are displayed for convenience; the arithmetic works the same for any decimal currency.

Behind the answer

How this calculator works

The tip equals the pre-tip bill multiplied by the chosen tip rate. The total is the bill plus the tip, and the equal share is that total divided by the number of people.

This approach assumes the selected rate applies to the entire entered bill. Local customs differ on whether a tip is calculated before or after sales tax.

Worked example

For a $60 bill with a 20% tip, the tip is $12 and the total is $72. Split equally between two people, each person's share is $36.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The split is equal and does not allocate individual menu items.
  • It does not automatically detect taxes, service charges, coupons, or included gratuities.
  • Rounding each person's share can create a difference of a few cents; one person may need to cover the remainder.

Common questions

Should I tip on the tax?

Practices vary. If you prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal rather than the final taxed amount.

What if gratuity is already included?

Review the receipt before adding another tip. A service charge and a gratuity may also be treated differently by the business.
