How to

Convert Length Measurements

Convert U.S. customary and metric lengths for projects, travel, school, or everyday use.

How to do it

  1. Measure with the most appropriate ruler or tape.
  2. Enter the number and original unit.
  3. Select the needed unit and round only at the end.

Behind the answer

How this calculator works

Every entry is converted through meters, the SI base unit of length, and then into the chosen destination unit. Exact definitions include 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters and 1 foot = 0.3048 meter.

Keeping the full internal decimal until the final display reduces rounding error when converting between very small and very large units.

Worked example

A six-foot length equals 72 inches. Multiplying 6 by the exact factor 0.3048 gives 1.8288 meters, commonly rounded to 1.83 meters for everyday use.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The tool converts length only, not area or volume.
  • Construction tolerances and measuring-tool accuracy can matter more than extra decimal places.
  • Round only to the precision justified by the original measurement.

Common questions

Why are some conversions exact and others rounded?

The inch is exactly 25.4 mm by international definition, but the displayed answer may be rounded for readability.

Can I convert square feet with this tool?

No. Area conversion requires squaring the length conversion factor.
