How to
Convert Kitchen Measurements
Quickly convert common cooking volumes between U.S. and metric units.
How to do it
- Enter the amount shown in your recipe.
- Select the recipe’s original unit.
- Choose the desired unit and read the result.
Behind the answer
How this calculator works
The converter first changes the entered volume to milliliters, then converts that common value into the requested unit. It uses U.S. customary cooking measures: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons, 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, and 1 U.S. fluid ounce = 29.5735 milliliters.
Volume conversion does not determine ingredient weight. A cup of flour and a cup of honey occupy similar volume but have very different mass.
Worked example
Two U.S. cups equal 32 tablespoons, 16 U.S. fluid ounces, or approximately 473 milliliters. For kitchen use, a recipe may reasonably round that metric result to 475 mL.
Assumptions and limitations
- The calculator uses U.S. cups and fluid ounces, which differ from some imperial measures.
- Spoon and cup markings can vary; use calibrated tools when precision matters.
- Do not use volume conversion to substitute grams without an ingredient-specific density.
Common questions
Are fluid ounces the same as ounces by weight?
No. Fluid ounces measure volume; ordinary ounces measure weight or mass.
Why does my recipe call one cup 240 mL?
Recipes often use convenient rounded values. This calculator uses the defined U.S. conversion of approximately 236.6 mL.
